Die Arbeit wird sich auf Schwermetalle beschränken, die im Artikel 11 der Richtlinie 94/62/EG aufgelistet sind. Muss CEN/TC 261/SC 4 auch andere gefährliche Stoffe bearbeiten, sollte diesem Arbeitsgremium eine Liste unterbreitet werden.
